A simple basket of newspaper tubes
Weaving from newspaper tubes is a popular technique for making various baskets and organizers. We will tell you how to learn how to make newspaper tubes and give step-by-step instructions for making a rectangular basket. We chose weaving a rectangular product precisely because it is the easiest to make it. If you have never tried to weave something out of the newspaper tubes with your own hands, this master class is just for you. However, experienced craftsmen also have something to see, just skip the step about manufacturing tubes.
The finished product turns out very beautiful and functional. Where to adapt it, you will definitely find. What is especially valuable, baskets from newspaper tubes are durable, therefore, suitable for storing almost anything.
What do we need?
- many newspapers (regular)
- thick cardboard (we will make the bottom of it)
- box-based (take unnecessary, because we will cut it to braid, and then throw it away)
- clothes pegs or paper clips
- paint and varnish for handicrafts (optional)
How to weave a basket?
Let's start with step by step instructions on weaving tubes for beginners.
So, to make a straw, we need to take one newspaper page and cut it exactly in half. Like this.
We take a needle or some wire and begin to twist the sheet at an angle, as shown in the photo.
When reached the end, fix the tip with glue.
Twist about a dozen other such tubes. It is difficult to say the exact amount, because the size of the selected box is different for everyone.
We take the cardboard from which we will make the bottom of the basket (note that the bottom must be the same size as the box we took as a blank). We make marks in equal segments, as in the photo. Notice how the corners are marked. Let the tubes climb to the bottom of the box about 3-4 cm. Fix them with clothespins and gently glue.
We take a carton of exactly the same size. Now we glue the first cardboard with the glue and cover the second one so that the short ends of the tubes are inside. We put on top some kind of press so that the cartons “grow together” properly, and wait for the glue to dry.
If there is no press, just attach the clothespins.
We undertake weaving
We make the first row simply: we catch our tubes one after another, that is, next to ours.
We put the box on our design, we lift the tubes up and fix them with clothespins.
So the corners are worked out.
Now we take another tube and undertake the weaving of the side walls of the basket.
Move the clothespins when you undo the braiding tube, then fix it so that nothing falls.
As soon as the tube is finished, fix the tip with glue, take a new one (or simply insert them into each other).
We spin carefully: one tube after another. When we understand that we have already reached the desired height of the basket, we undertake the final stage of weaving. Take a close look at the pictures - this is a step by step instruction. Repeat everything step by step.
Now you can take the paint and give the craft the desired color. In fact, we made everything from paper, so it will be easy to transform the product. When everything is ready, varnish the basket so that moisture and time do not spoil it.
