Niecy Nash, Julie Goldman Get Sapphic on ‘The Mindy Project’
A lesbian character has finally found her way onto the sitcom The Mindy Project and it’s none other than Reno 911’s Niecy Nash.
During this week’s episode, Mindy arrives late to a meeting with the new department chief of the hospital, Dr. Jean Fishman (Nash), and she is unable to stop her Iggy Azalea ringtone. This lands her the graveyard shift, and in attempt to bond with Fishman and get her out of the shift, she takes Fishman out on a girls’ night.
Mindy tries to reconcile with a cactus, but that won’t win over the doctor. She finally gets Fishman to agree to meet up later that day and the two have a great time. As the women are standing outside of Fishman’s apartment, Mindy reaches to her hair to flick out a bug and Fishman kisses her. Surprised, Mindy kisses her back.
The next day, Mindy, who has already changed her ringtone for Fishman to the Divinyls “I Touch Myself” announces that she is gay. Her co-workers start to share stories about how they have all had gay experiences, too, but that doesn’t mean she is gay and she needs to come clean to the doctor.
Instead, Mindy invites her over to snuggle by the fire.
Later, Mindy is convinced by Danny to tell Fishman the truth. They head to the hospital and Mindy tells Fishman, “You’re an amazing kisser. You have the softness of a woman, but the strength of a man. I was actually thinking about it later in the bath…the problem is I’m straight, and I’m sorry if I led you on.”
Though Fishman is disappointed, it turns out she has a wife, whom Danny accidentally calls “sir.” Her wife, Deb-Deb (Julie Goldman) storms out, and when Mindy calls Fishman to apologize for potentially ruining her marriage, she impulsively said that Danny was suicidal over Mindy’s lesbian affair.
A concerned Deb-Deb and Fishman run over to console Danny, which forces Mindy to come clean once again of her lies. Deb-Deb and Fishman make up, and Danny gets to toss a glass of red wine at Mindy, so (nearly) everyone wins.
