Rocking chair do it yourselfAugust 17, 2010
After a hard day of work, sometimes you want to just relax in a rocking chair, and this desire is especially important when there is no rocking chair at home. Naturally, first of all in this case we will think about buying such an armchair, but is it worth spending money if you can do it yourself?
This is possible even if you do not own special techniques and can not weave a rocking chair or cut it out of wood, because there are easier ways. The method that we describe now is suitable for everyone and you will see for yourself that a rocking chair with your own hands is simple.
What will we do rocking chair
The self-made rocking-chair can be made of the most different materials, but we will consider a variant of its creation from plywood. The fact is that plywood is not only not inferior to ordinary wood in strength, but in many ways surpasses it, so you can even use not too thick plywood to assemble our product. Moreover, plywood is a much simpler material in processing than wood, so even a person who has never held a jigsaw in hand will cope with its processing.
Moreover, it is easier to paint plywood and it is easier to care for it after the product is assembled, and most importantly, it practically does not deteriorate under the influence of moisture or temperature drops, so that the rocking chair can also be used for summer house, which is not heated in winter. and for outdoor use on the veranda where rain can fall.
Tools and Materials
- Several sheets of plywood with dimensions of 1500 by 800 mm, 4, 10 and 15 mm thick
- Stationery knife
- Suitable size screwdriver
- Cardboard for patterns
When choosing sheets of plywood, it is worth considering just such sizes of sheets for thick blanks, since sheets with a thickness of 15 mm are ideal for making the side faces of a homemade rocking chair. Thinner sheets are suitable for the manufacture of the backrest and seat for a chair, as well as for longitudinal crossbars or for decoration.
In order to understand how to cut plywood for a rocking chair, it is necessary to understand what form it will be.Here your imagination is not limited by anything, because in the process you can either correct the shape or simply start making the rocking chair again, which will not be too expensive due to the low cost of plywood sheets.
However, in order not to waste time and extra money on the purchase of new sheets, instead of spoiled ones, we advise you to prepare templates for plywood marking on cardboard beforehand. The shape of the rocking chair you can come up with completely independently, or use the ideas taken from the photo of finished products, but anyway, try to follow the general rules in creating patterns.
First of all, make the length of the rocking chair skids approximately twice as wide as the length of the seat and place them slightly displaced in the direction of the supposed back of the chair. This is necessary in order to avoid the product tipping over during use. Also do not make the runners too thin. Their height should be at least 5 centimeters for plywood with a thickness of 15 mm.
Also mark the places where the back and the seat of your rocking chair will be attached to the side parts. These places should be made thicker so that you can easily fix the insert. Also consider where you will fix the transverse parts of the workpiece, such as - a footrest or stiffener. The scheme should be done in such a way that when rocking the transverse sheets do not come into contact with the floor.
After that, you can take a sharp stationery knife and cut a blank template from a sheet of cardboard. We will use this sheet to transfer the markings to plywood, so make a blank of cardboard.
Pattern for seat and backrest
Interesting instructions for cutting and preparing templates:
Most often, the seat and back are made of even parts of a plywood sheet. It is rather convenient both at production, and when using a rocking chair. In order to cut such blanks, it is also worthwhile to prepare in advance a sheet of thick cardboard, on which it is necessary to measure the desired width and height of these parts. It is necessary to cut them with a margin, so that if necessary they can be cut. Such blanks should be attached to the cut blanks for the side of the chair, and if the dimensions are the same, then everything is fine.
In the same case, if the seat or the back of the rocking chair does not fit, you need to cut a piece of cardboard or take another one and use other sizes.
Most often, as an additional element for the rocking chair, there are either decorative elements or a stand under the legs. In some cases, they make an additional back under the legs, but this will make the structure somewhat lighter and will make the swaying process on it more difficult.
Also, the construction can be lightened by cutting out small pieces of a beautiful and regular shape from the side parts of the blank in order to give them an interesting appearance. Note that these slots in the rocking chair will be strictly symmetrical, because you will use the same blank to create a marking for the left and right side of the chair.
In the same case, if you want to strengthen the structure somewhere or just make additional linings, then no one will limit your imagination.
Cut all elements
If you are sure that from the blanks that you have already cut out of cardboard, perfect patterns will come out, feel free to attach them to sheets of plywood and mark them. After that, we arm ourselves with an electric jigsaw or a milling cutter and carefully cut out the plywood sheets by marking.
Do not worry if the plywood is cut with burrs, because such places can be easily sanded with sandpaper and most likely it will have to be done to bring the workpiece to a perfect condition. After that, it's time to assemble our chair.
Assembling rocking chairs
In order to properly assemble our rocking chair, we will start the assembly from the side. Note the places where we will fix the screws with the seat and back and other decorative inserts. After this, you can either just screw in the screws to fix our design, or drill out the hole slightly, but this is not at all necessary. The plywood is quite flexible and you can easily screw in the screws and fix the parts together.
Ensure that the screws are screwed in tightly and evenly, and that, as a result, the parts take up a strictly perpendicular position. You should not be afraid if the screw head is visible outside the chair, since if you wish, you can close it at the stage of finishing the chair.
For fixing the backrest and seat, you need to use screws for fixing approximately every 3-5 cm to achieve perfect fixation. For other decorative linings can be limited to a smaller number of screws.
Testing and Finishing
When we have made sure that the chair is assembled correctly and no detail is forgotten, you can try to sit on it and sway. If everything is in order, then it's time to think about how we will finish our chair.
The simplest way would be to paint it with a spray, but there are more interesting options. You can use soft pillows or blankets and sew them on the back and seat of the rocking chair, or with the help of gold leaf and two-component craquelure varnish to cover the armrests, but anyway, the discussion of the finishing of the rocking chair is a separate topic for conversation.
