The period when winter ends and spring comes is considered to be one of the most important events in antiquity. The pagans believed that the health and well-being of a person until the next year depended on how the holidays were going on. In the people, the meeting of spring received several different names, each of which reflected the essence of the celebration. Spring, with its warmth and fertility, ensured a comfortable life for people. Not by chance, they prepared very carefully for parting with the winter and meeting the spring.

Seeing the winter in 2019 will be held for seven days - seven weeks before the feast of Bright Easter. This year, the holiday week will start on 4th and continue until March 10th. ComodicaIn the ancient Slavs, the winter farewell was called Komoeditsa. It is believed that this particular pagan holiday became the ancestor of Maslenitsa. Komoyeditsu noted 7 days before the Slavic new year - the day of the vernal equinox. Over time, when Christian holidays appeared, this period began to be celebrated as Cheese Week.

Popular and Christian holidays have different essence and meaning. Cheese week is celebrated by the Orthodox on the eve of the beginning of Lent. Since among the permitted products were dairy products, butter and cheese, this week received such a speaking name.

Maslenitsa is not included in the church calendar and is considered a national celebration of farewell to the winter cold, and is celebrated at the spring equinox.Over time, this holiday became a real folk festival, which was celebrated for all seven days, and each had its own special meaning. The main symbol of the celebrations are treats for pancakes and festivities, which end with the rite of burning stuffed winter.

In addition to the main symbol of the holiday - pancakes, it is customary to cook flour dishes with various fillings. To treat relatives and guests on the table must have been standing dumplings with cheese and potatoes, pancakes, cheesecakes and pies. Baking was prepared on the eve so as not to be distracted from the festivities on holidays.
  • Tuesday. The second day of the holiday cycle bears the symbolic name “Zaigryshi” On Tuesday, the festivities were already beginning, the main instigators of which were young people.Contests were organized, ice slides and special pillars were built, on top of which souvenirs for winners were tied. It is believed that “Zayryshi” is the best time to choose a bride and a groom, therefore on Tuesday it was customary to invite the matchmakers.
  • Wednesday. The third day has a tasty and capacious name "Gourmet". On Wednesday, hostesses showed their culinary skills and treated everyone to pancakes with a variety of fillings. The winner of the contest, whose pancakes were the most delicate, ruddy and tasty presented with gifts. On this day, it was customary to visit the guests with treats, visit relatives and friends, married men congratulated the mother-in-law on the holiday.
  • Thursday. The most fun day in the week, which began mass celebrations. "Run loose" - the day when costumed performances were performed on the street, young people led round dances with songs and dances. Men entertained with fist fights, participated in various competitions. The hostesses were preparing a special treat - cookies in the shape of a bird. On this day, it was decided to have fun until the night, and it was necessary to give up household chores. A special ban was sewing and knitting.
  • Friday. On the fifth day of the celebration, married men invited their wives' mothers to visit. From here this day also received the name "Tishchiny of evening". To invite the mother-in-law men convened their friends, who dressed up in bright costumes.
  • Saturday. On the penultimate day of Shrovetide, it was customary to call on her husband's sister, which is why he got the name “Zolovkina sit-rounds” In addition to serving her sister-in-law, they gave gifts prepared especially for her. Bachelors and those who did not have a sister-in-law dedicated this day to their relatives and friends.
  • Sunday. Seeing off the winter ended on Sunday and was considered the main day of the week. Orthodox on this day attend churches and participate in worship dedicated to the upcoming fasting. In the people this day was called "Provody". It was on Sunday that people said goodbye to winter, and also asked forgiveness from each other. In the center of the village they put a scarecrow of Shrovetide from straw, which was burned as soon as the sun went down. Ash scattered over the fields to consecrate the land, which in return will give a rich harvest.

On the eve of the celebration, it was necessary to be cleansed of all sins, so people bathed in baths and made new festive clothes.During all seven days, it was decided to regale friends and relatives with homemade pancakes, visit cemeteries and leave them treats. After burning the stuffed Shrovetide, the housewives cleaned the houses, washed the dishes, washed and burned all the remnants of the festive food.

Folk omens

There was a sign of pancakes, on the number of which depended the health of all family members. It was believed that the more pancakes at Shrovetide the hostess baked, the better. If the pancakes were burnt, they had to be given to a cat or dog, otherwise someone close could be ill. Bad taste pancakes talked about the health of the hostess, which could soon get sick. To avoid this, a tasteless pancake had to be burned in a furnace.

Young girls invited the groom, for this they baked pancakes and treated them to all the men on the street. If men thanked and asked for supplements, this year the girl could get married.

Although it was not customary to demonstrate personal relationships in public, during the winter farewell lovers could openly talk about their people and even kiss without fear of condemnation.It is believed that by showing their love, young people attracted happiness and well-being to their family life.

Traditions in different countries

In Catholic countries also celebrate the holiday of goodbye to the winter and the meeting of spring. Despite the fact that depending on national peculiarities, the name of the holiday may differ, the traditions are very similar to the Russian ones. Like Shrovetide, the winter farewell is marked before Lent. For many Catholics, this period is marked by carnivals and theatrical processions.

During the holidays comes a lot of recreational activities, games, competitions for adults and children. One of the most famous and popular celebrations in Europe is the Venice Carnival, which lasts for ten days. Heat is returning, the land is preparing for a new crop that will provide people with food, and therefore well-being.
